Senesco claims to have doubled the shelf life of bananas. Not to belabor the obvious, but this is a product of the sad functionalist reductivism of so many researchers in the field. Delayed senescence is desirable only if you think of food as a puddle of carbs to keep you alive until you come up with your next stupid idea. And it's not like they're doing any favors to people who can't afford to worry about the quality of their food. I mean, how many people are starving because the only food they can get is 10-day old bananas?
