Citrus is now in full effect, as witnessed by the first Pixies of the year -- not yet Ojai, nor at the height of their powers, but nevertheless a joyous sight. Satsumas and Paiges are winding down, and Gold Nuggets, mentioned earlier, appear to be more morphologically unstable than they first seemed: some of them are very large (others remain small and cute).
Also spotted: a new blood orange variety, labelled Vainiglia. Imagining the exotic fragrance of Sicily, I was cruelly disappointed when I had to spit out the first insipid bite: totally subacid. How could the Italians be responsible for such a monstrosity? Ah, of course, they're per i bambini.* Save yourself the revulsion and check out a Cara-Cara instead. The first Taroccos are here as well.
*The Sicilian vainiglia is obviously not a blood orange, but rather one of the ancestors of the piece of shit that was sold to me yesterday. I don't even want to defile my compost with it.
